Preferred video format for this device

I'm trying to put MP4's on the SD card. If I plug the sd card into a usb adapter I can copy/paste the files over, but they won't play when I plug the sd card back in.
If I plug the device into the computer and transfer the files that asks me if I want to convert then upload. So I say yes, and it converts the MP4 to wmv, and it won't play.If I say no, the device stops responding and the files won't upload.

These MP4 files play on the desktop computer just fine in WMP

What the heck could I possibly be doing wrong here?

My suggestion, (because you seem to have a configuration issue on your computer) would be to try using an app called AirDroid to transfer the files using your network. Or you could also use DropBox (free for 2GB). What you have explained is not normal, especially if you were using Windows Explorer. And I can't think of a way to fix it so this would be a good workaround.
