Question Apps same as those on phone

I have got my dad a new tab 2, and when I set it up for him, it automatically loaded the same apps that are on his Samsung phone (Galaxy Ace 2)!

I have had several android devices, none Samsung though, and google play distinguishes between them automatically and this hasn't happened to me.

What settings do I need to tweak, and do I need to do a hard reset?
Do I need to setup and use a different Samsung a/c (to that on phone)?

    Welcome to the forum

Clear it with factory data reset.
Set up again and take a look at the initial set up when connect to the Play Store account.

OK, but on no android device, my phones (x4), or dads phone or tab 2, have I ever setup Google Play.....it automatically comes from gmail address added to the device!?

I have since viewed on Google Play, where it does distinguish between the devices and doesn't show those apps on the phone on the tablet, but they are.
I need to sort this, as I wish to install differing apps on the tab......HELP!?

You are unknowingly setting up a Google account, not just the mail. When you do the factory reset one option should be do you want to sync with Google?, say no. Then open the Google Play app and tap the 3 little squares upper right and find the setting that says update apps automatically and make certain it is not checked.
