Question Samsung Galaxy Tablet 2 10.1 Won't Turn Off After Recent Update

Hello, my mother updated her tablet earlier today and since then it is not turning off. When we attempt to turn the device off, it will appear to power down, and then restart. It currently has about 50% battery power so I am wondering if we should let the battery drain, recharge and then restart it; I'm only worried that it might not turn back on afterwards.

Is anyone else experiencing this or maybe have any advice? I will gladly add any additional information if necessary. This is my first time posting so I am unsure what all might be needed.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

To help those with this problem, here are the current suggestions for solving it posted within the thread (thanks to all who took the time to post their solutions). Reading through the thread might help with further clarification if you require it. Janner43

    1. Factory Reset from settings (remember to backup first)
    2. "I talked to someone with Samsung tech support and they had me plug in the device with the charger then hold the power button until it turned off. Then, it stayed off." (Eliskay)
    3. "If I shut the tablet down from the desktop it doesn't shutdown it just reboots. If I go to the Lock Screen and shut it down from there it will shutdown." (rsb)
    4. "Simple thing to resolve this: REMOVE (micro)SD CARD FROM TABLET and gadget will turn off. That's all." (pkitai)
    5. "The only workaround that's been reliable for me is to do the shutdown/restart, and then do a shutdown from the lock screen when it re-boots." (GregInMich)

Welcome to the forum eliskay & kriks787

I recommend that in this situation, the most effective solution will be to factory reset the device from settings. That process will reinstall the latest updated firmware and version of Android on your device and may well repair the situation if the update had a glitch. We have a step by step guide to the Factory Reset process linked from our Guides, FAQs & Tips section (link in my signature)

If that doesn't enable your device to switch off and on again in the normal way, then you will need to contact Samsung for advice & possibly a warranty repair.

    All the best

Sorry but I have not yet fixed the problem. I will try the factory reset though and give an update.

Thank you for this advice. I was trying to avoid a factory reset because my mother is touchy about losing the progress she has made in her various games. Such a silly reason to let a problem persist though.

Thanks again! I will be sure to try it.

    Same Problem

I'm having the same problem. Update software automatically and now it won't shut down. It just keeps rebooting itself.
Isn't there any way to fix this without a hard reset?

    Factory reset concerns

I was unable to find the factory reset instructions in the FAQ but I did find a video on YouTube. Unfortunately the guy said it has to be completely off before you begin the process. Since turning it off is the problem, I am still stuck. Is there hope that a patch or something will come out in a future software update?
