    Post [HOW TO] Factory Reset your Samsung Tablet

    Many on the forum have expressed a concern over "how to" Factory Reset. For those who are not sure, here is a general guide to the process for you.

    This process gives a fresh, clean installation of the most recent firmware that has been installed onto your device, so if you have updated your firmware since purchase, it will not put you back onto the original firmware that came on your device.

    It may seem like stating the blindingly obvious, but following this process will delete all the data on your device. By following this guide, you agree to accept full & complete responsibility for doing so.




    1) Start with a fully charged device & ensure that anything you want to keep is copied off your Tab before you do anything else. You can copy files, photos & so on either to a computer if you have one, or to a microSD card, or if you have an adapter that goes from your charging point to a USB connection, onto a USB flash drive. (Use a File Manager app to do this) Alternatively, you can pop them up into Dropbox, Google Drive, Box or similar cloud storage using the apps those services offer.

    2) If you use the stock browser, then either get an app to backup your bookmarks (and there is a wide choice of apps that offer this, free from the Play Store), or sync them with Chrome browser or Dolphin browser & then backup those bookmarks from whichever choice you make.

    3) Ensure you know your Google account address & password & also your wifi password for your home router as well.

    4) Confirm you have copies of everything you want to keep & that they are stored off your tablet - check twice, it is too late once you have wiped your device.

    5) Now go into tablet settings - backup and reset - Factory data reset. You will see there that there is an option to backup your data to Google's servers & also to allow the automatic restore of application data when apps are reinstalled. I have never personally used this feature so I cannot confirm which apps it will backup & restore or how successful it is, but I see no reason not to use it - especially if it will give you an added level of confidence with regards to resetting your device.

    6) Having finished step 5, if you choose to use it, then again from settings - backup and reset, choose Factory data reset and Factory Reset your device. This will wipe the tablet clean and then reinstall the most up to date firmware on the device from a protected area on the Tablet that will not get wiped. When the process has finished - which should only take a few minutes, it will be just as if you had bought the tablet & were setting it up for the first time.

    7) You can now add your wifi password, then your Google account. All the apps you have installed from the Play Store will be linked to your Google account & you will not need to pay for them again if you had bought some. If you selected the Google backup option, there will be a part of the process that allows you to restore from Google's servers.

    8) Copy your files, photos etc back again in the same way that you copied them off.

    9) Finally, power your device off fully. Wait for 30 seconds, power it on again & away you go.



    Resetting prior to sale/disposal.

    If you are resetting your device prior to sale or to pass on to someone else, simply follow steps 1-6 inclusive. When you get your new device, entering your Google account onto your new device will then allow you to proceed on your new device from step 7




    Alternative methods for an unresponsive device. (Credit to Astrix for this original information )

    1. Cold boot.
    * Hold down Power + Volume UP at the same time.
    * When the Samsung startup screen shows, release the power button and continue to hold the UP button.

    2. Reboot to Recovery: Power + Volume UP until it enters recovery.
    * Hold down Power + Volume UP at the same time.
    * When the Samsung startup screen shows, release the power button and continue to hold the UP button.
    * One of the options will be to Factory Reset. This will do the same as a Factory Reset from settings, but can be useful when you cannot see the screen for some reason.
