In my opinion, at this time, the best anti virus and malware for Android is none.

Totally agree. NONE. Its android and you don't need antivirus software. Just a con to prey on the weak.

Except it is NOT, REPEAT NOT, needed. Any antivirus software is just bloat ware and slows the tab down. Had my tab since launch in UK and been on alot of strange sites looking for viruses (need to as my job is a microsoft certified systems engineer) and nothing wrong with my wonderful tab.
Just waiting for a google/android ultrabook/laptop to arrive. Then total domination!!

Let's not get into a debacle over the merits of anti virus.
Some swear by it, some call it bloatware.
At this point Android does not really need an anti virus software or app as long as users are diligent in the sources of where they get their apps but there are documented cases of malware in apps and a recent report from Google of a couple of websites with it attached that does affect Android.
I tried the most popular anti virus app on my phone a couple of years ago and found it to be a battery hog , resource hog and the developer spamming my inbox with almost constant reminders to buy the full version but that was in 2010 and perhaps things are different now in both the app and developers respect for privacy.

Hi thanks for the ideas. I am new to the Android &Tab world and just assumed that anti virus would be necessary. Looks like I should just relax and get on with learning how to use this new toy! Thanks Stephenfomeltham

Yes, just be informed about third party apps and read reviews on the market for Google store apps and you should be fine.

OK I will bow to your knowledge but is there an easy way to understand why I dont need it if I have an android tab and is also true of my samsung android smartphone. I accept as an innocent I automatically buy into the need but maybe only because i dont know better and have been hit by viruses before on my laptop.

Google's open-source software leader has lashed out at companies selling antivirus software for mobile devices including Google's Android operating system, calling them "charlatans and scammers".Chris DiBona, Google's open-source programs manager, unleashed his tirade after seeing a press report about "inherent" insecurity of open-source software, which is used not just in Android but also Apple's iOS. He argued that Android, iOS, and Research in Motion's BlackBerry OS don't need antivirus software."Virus companies are playing on your fears to try to sell you BS protection software for Android, RIM, and, iOS," DiBona said on*Google+. "They are charlatans and scammers. If you work for a company selling virus protection for Android, RIM or iOS, you should be ashamed of yourself."He didn't mention any companies by name, but there are plenty of examples. Symantec, Intel's McAfee subsidiary, F-Secure, and Kaspersky all sell mobile antimalware software. Also getting in on the action are two carriers, Sprint and AT&T.DiBona argued that mobile devices, while not flawless, are inherently more secure than personal computers."No major cell phone has a 'virus' problem in the traditional sense that*Windows*and some*Mac machines*have seen," he said. "There have been some little things, but they haven't gotten very far due to the user sandboxing models and the nature of the underlying kernels."Sandboxing confines computing processes to memory compartments and restricts their privileges, making it harder for a compromised program to be used as a launching point for more extensive attacks on a computing device.
